The culinary scene in Mexico City is exploding, just as it is in Buenos Aires. New restaurants, bars and bistros are sprouting everywhere, like the weeds that pop up in my back yard every spring. While searching out new little gems we stumbled across a cute little restaurant in Cuauhtémoc called Mon Dieu (“My God” in English).
This neighbohood is an incubator for new restaurants. We’ve recently reviewed a half-dozen or more in this little barrio. And this cute little restaurant, with just six tables seating about 16 customers, is something you should check out if you live in this neighborhood or are camping out nearby. It’s within about six blocks of several major and boutique hotels.
Their specialty is a cheese of Swiss origin (but produced in Guadalajara) called raclette. We’re able to add this one to our list of restaurants serving breakfast with eggs. They serve chilaquiles, which is a very popular Mexican dish (similar to Tex-Mex nachos) served throughout the day. It’s available with eggs or au gratin with the Swiss raclette, with either a red or green chili sauce. The red is a bit heavy on heat so I’d opt for green sauce if you’re not into food that’s very hot and spicy.
They also serve molletes for breakfast, sandwiches and salads, and serve the raclette in the Swiss tradition with new potatoes, with the melted cheese scaped onto the potatoes. We haven’t tried those but will update the post once I do. The ambiance is great. The service is top-notch. The owners are usually onsite. It’s a first-rate little restaurant with heart, soul, and good food.
