Merkavá stands out as a rare gem in Mexico City, offering trendy and hip Middle Eastern cuisine in the vibrant neighborhood of Condesa. Although not as ubiquitous as local taco stands, securing a reservation for dinner is advisable due to its popularity, while lunchtime visits tend to be more accessible. Chef Daniel Ovadía, renowned for his casual dining establishments across the city, brings his sophisticated gourmet style to Merkavá, paying homage to his Israeli wife and friends.

The restaurant's sleek and minimalist decor doesn't immediately reveal its Middle Eastern influence, aside from subtle nods like the Star of David incorporated into the tabletop branding. However, the menu showcases a fusion of Israeli favorites alongside creative interpretations with a Mexican twist. Options abound, from Salatim platters featuring classic Israeli salads to unique hummus plates and an array of Nishnushim (Israeli snacks), including falafel and stuffed grape leaves.

Even the appetizers at Merkavá have substantial portions, blurring the line between starters and main courses. Dishes like grilled kofta made with Wagyu beef skewers offer generous servings, complemented by main courses featuring chicken skewers, fish dishes, and the popular braised beef shank in a spicy gravy. For dessert, patrons can indulge in the classic Israeli Malabi pudding, infused with rosewater flavor and drizzled with pomegranate syrup.

Despite its uniqueness, Merkavá remains affordable, with prices often lower than comparable restaurants in Condesa. Open for both lunch and dinner, it's important to note that contrary to some reviews, Merkavá does not serve breakfast. With its gourmet take on Middle Eastern cuisine, set in a contemporary ambiance buzzing with energy, Merkavá adds a refreshing and welcome dimension to Mexico City's culinary landscape.
