In a Nutshell



Good traditional breakfast items in an otherwise ordinary restaurant. Reasonable prices. Worth a visit but not trip across town.

Fonda Mayora gets mixed reviews in the online chatter. It was named as one of the 12 Hot Restaurants in Mexico City in a June article on Eater.com and was mentioned as one of the “go to” restaurants in the recent New York Times article, “36 hours in Mexico City”.

This casual and inexpensive restaurant has a menu and kitchen orchestrated by Gerardo Vázquez Lugo, the chef of the extremely popular restaurant, Nico’s, in the Mexico City suburb of La Clavería.

That said, the décor is not very impressive. It looks about like any other corner café.

I ordered the Huevos Encamisados. A fried egg encased in a corn tortilla and covered with black beans. The egg was perfectly cooked. The tortilla was fresh and soft. The beans were an interesting addition. I thought the meal was well executed. At US $5.75 the price was right too.

The coffee was pretty ordinary, but not bad.

If I lived in the neighborhood within walking distance, I’d visit the place once in a while. But I found it no more appealing than the breakfast and coffee I had at Manduca and the restaurant, Breakfast Condesa, both within three blocks of Fonda Mayora.

And I certainly wouldn’t put it on a list of the best restaurants in town. There are dozens of restaurants I’d rather visit in Mexico City.
