Huacho steakhouse is a comparatively new addition to the restaurant scene in Buenos Aires. Huacho is located on the downtown side of Retiro in close proximity to Plaza San Martín, top international hotels and all the top tourist attractions in the city.
The décor is slightly contemporary but features lots of warm touches with wood and leather accents that give it the definite feel of an Argentina steakhouse, only one with a slightly more modern personality.
The steakhouse distinguishes itself from other steakhouses by emphasizing the Patagonian roots of the restaurant’s owners. Accordingly, you’ll find Patagonian lamb and grilled trout on the menu. If your visit to Argentina won’t include a detour to El Calafate, where lamb is abundant on the restaurant menus, this locale in Buenos Aires is the best spot to experience skilled preparation of lamb dishes that are such an important of Argentine culinary culture, often overshadowed by the city’s obsession with beef.
Despite landing a spot in the list of the city’s top 10 steakhouses, the prices are among the most reasonable compared to other steakhouses winning a spot on that list. You can get Argentina’s most ubiquitous steak, a 400g bife de chorizo for a full third of the price of what you’ll pay at Don Julio in Palermo. And quite honestly, we noted no difference in the quality of the experience except the lack of the annoying line to get seated at Don Julio and the ridiculously more excessive price of the food at Don Julio.
If you’re staying in a downtown hotel west of Avenida Corrientes, or just want to experience the best spot in the city for Patagonian lamb, you won’t find a better spot in downtown Buenos Aires. Further east, close to San Telmo, you might want to give Elauge Hermanos a try.
Also a great spot for groups that include non-beef eaters since the restaurant offers a seafood option that might not be available at other steakhouses (although many of the city’s top steakhouses do offer at least one seafood alternative.
Huacho, although small, packs a lot of quality into that small space.
