Alvear Grill is the result of a recent change of direction at the Alvear Palace Hotel. The new restaurant, that boasts a more contemporary menu, with an emphasis on grilled fish and beef, replaced the 25-year resident of the hotel, the French restaurant, La Bourgogne. The change was needed. But now, what is essentially a steakhouse wearing a tuxedo is a bit odd. Once you get past this incongruity, everything else is splendid, both service and food. Skip the steaks and go straight to the page with the duck and venison. That’s where the kitchen shines.

El Burladero is a classy, modern-day take on Spanish cuisine. Friendly and attentive waiters and excellent execution of a some of the best versions we’ve seen of some Spanish classics, make El Burladero one of the best casual dining options in Buenos Aires and a three-course lunch menu with wine included for US$10 is a steal.

The prix fixe (fixed-price) menu at Tandoor restaurant in Buenos Aires is a value. Real Indian cuisine in an upscale ambience.

Lobo Café is the best option for breakfast in Puerto Madero, overlooking the harbour. Nice decor. Friendly, but lackluster service. Commendable French toast.

Best Burger in town. Hands down. It’s expensive, but if you’ve got a craving for a really good burger, this is it.

Café Crespin has a variety of non-traditional breakfast items for anyone looking for something a little more stimulating than a cup of coffee and croissant. We like the French toast, with scrambled eggs and real crisp bacon. But the hot cakes weren’t hot and didn’t impress. Service was horrible on a Saturday morning.

Loreto Garden Bar is sort of an “I’m Bohemian so mainstream restaurant decor bores me” kind of place with mostly sandwiches, salads and burgers. And lots of tasty little desserts. Good service by tattooed waitresses. Burgers and sandwiches were good too.

One of the hottest spots in BA for a drink and we’d heard they serve a darn good burger. We heard wrong. Overcooked despite our request for ‘jugoso’ (medium-rare).
