Restaurant Review for Tesla
Rating: 3.8 stars
Tesla in Palermo Hollywood is one of those new Gastropubs that doubles as a bar and restaurant.
The minimalist décor is very appealing. It has exposed brick walls. Nice lighting. A big bar with very good artisanal beer on tap. It’s a really comfortable place to have a drink or a casual meal.
The menu is designed around the Gastopub personality, a variety of tapas to munch on, and sandwiches and such. On our initial visit I shared some fried calamari and meatballs in a tomato sauce with by buddy and we had big pint of beer each.
The tapas were really good. The calamari was tender. Not the least bit chewy. And it had a crisp, tempura-like exterior. The meatballs were well-seasoned and covered in a very fresh and delicious tomato sauce.
I’ve been back to Tesla on a couple of occasions. I recently had the pork shoulder sandwich and the cheeseburger. They were acceptable but not anything close to as good as the tapas I’d tried on the prior visit. The bondiola sandwich, slow cooked for six hours, over at nearby Butcher’s is a much better sandwich but they don’t have the great beer on tap that Tesla pours.
I’ve had mixed success with service. On a couple occasions the service was very good but on another visit there were some ridiculously long waits for food and other patrons were having difficulty getting the attention of the waiter. I think this may have been a “bad night” as the owner, who was not there on this particular evening, is usually there making sure everything is up to snuff.
Tesla is a very nicely decorated restaurant / bar with very good craft beer on tap. Based on our visits I’d recommend the tapas over the sandwiches. They were delicious.
