There’s a psychological disorder called dissociative neurosis that causes a person to exhibit two (or more) distinct personalities. It’s what we commonly call a “split-personality”. Well there’s a new genre of eating and drinking establishment in Buenos Aires that has that ailment. Sometimes called Gastro Pubs. Sometimes called Resto-Bars. These are places that just can’t quite decide whether they’re a restaurant or bar.
All the better as I see it. Two of my favorite things … a place to eat and a place to drink … all rolled into one convenient package.
We recently bragged about the trendy and very popular Floreria Atlantico. They have really good food and drinks. If you like rubbing elbows in the crowd this is about as good as it gets in the Gastro-Pub category.
I recently discovered SHOUT just a few blocks from current abode near Downtown. This is another one of those split personality locales. Here’s how it played out.
I made my way up the big staircase to the second floor. Nicely decorated. Big impressive works of art on the walls. Tables nicely set with candles flickering away on every table. There was a single stool available at the bar so I jumped onto that one.
This place has amiable bartenders and they like mixing up those fancy cocktails where they take out flame torches to char all kinds of condiments from bark to orange peels. The sign outside indicated this place was the “Don of Tequila”. Well that may be bragging a bit. They only had three brands. Cuervo, Jimador and Patron. Not being in the mood for laying out 13 greenbacks for a shot of tequila, I passed on the Patron and elected for the crystal clear Jimador. It tasted like … tequila. Which is a good thing.
I wasn’t all that hungry … but what the heck … I’m a food critic. I had to order something to discuss in this review. So after perusing the menu for a while I elected to try the octopus. This stuff, if not done correctly, can turn out pretty awful so I figured this would be a good test for the cooks back in that big open kitchen overlooking the bar.
I also ordered up a craft beer. The Patagonia Amber Ale.
Soon … one of the bartenders arrives with my tapa. This was a tentacle dusted in something spicy and roasted until it was this dark maroon color. It was served atop some cubed potatoes that had been drizzled with a tasty dressing and herbs. The potatoes were lip-smackin good. The octopus was pretty pleasing as well. Not chewy as it can often be. Well-seasoned. And pretty cool looking on the plate to boot.
I was watching everyone else and lots of tapas were coming out at the bar. Everyone seemed pretty satisfied with what was being served.
This place had a very similar vibe to what you get over at Floreria Atlantico, but with better prices and more room to move around. That’s a plus, especially if you’re claustrophobic.
I’m going back soon so I can sample a few more of those tapas. And for the sake of research, I’ll try out a new cocktail too.
