Restaurant Review for The Burgers at Mr Jack
Rating: 3.5 stars
I’ve had burgers at Mr Jack on several occasions. They are everywhere you turn so naturally the odds are that you’re going to stop by and occasionally buy a burger. Burgers is what they do. I’ve never been all that impressed with the burgers on prior visits. I love the caramelized onions and the sweet smokey Jack Daniels sauce that accompanies the flagship “Mr Jack” burger. But the meat has always fallen short. Too lean. Obviously locally purchased meat.
But since it is the most notorious of all the burger joints in Santiago I felt obliged to include it in the face-off.
I ordered the Mr Jack on my most recent visit but I didn’t include the special garnishes in my initial few bites. I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not sure whether the owners have changed their source of meat or their mix of cuts but on this occasion the burgers seemed to have a higher fat content (that’s a good thing when it comes to taste) and were more coarsely ground.
Was I merely hallucinating from the excess fat I had ingested over the past two weeks while conducting the cheeseburger face-off? Or had Mr Jack made some positive changes? Well, regardless of which is true, the burger scored high on this visit. And, this burger patty was one of the few in the contest grilled on an open flame. That garnered the burger patty a full 4 stars.
Unfortunately the bun was a typical sesame seed topped bun that was a little dry. The toppings were good and fresh except for that gooey cheese substitute. It was bland and chewy. The French fries were also the run of the mill out of the bag variety. For what these guys charge for burgers you’d think they could put some fresh cut fries on the plate.
The décor is that mid-50’s American diner décor with chrome and black and white tile everywhere. A bit unoriginal and boring. The place looks like a Domino’ that serves burgers instead of hot dogs.
With burgers averaging just below $7.000 this place is one of the most expensive in the contest. I had to score it low for value for that reason. There were several places serving burgers that were just as good at much lower prices.
