Mooi now has three locations. One in Palermo Hollywood, one at the Rosedal in Palermo, and the other in Belgrano. The original location in Belgrano is in a beautifully restored residence. If I’m not mistaken the establishment was originally more of a tea and coffee house, specializing in baked goods and the like but the menu has obviously been expanded to include more savory fare. The second location is in Palermo Hollywood in a commercial building. The restaurant is tastefully decorated with a stark, clean urban décor offset with a few warm, homey touches like the fabric lamp shades suspended from the ceiling. It’s a very pleasant ambiance. A very casual and comfortable feel. Paper place mats … no tablecloths. The latest opening was in 2016 in ”arcos” below the train tracks running adjacent to the Rosedal in Palermo. There are several restaurants that have recently opened in this location and it has become a bit of culinary “hot-spot”. The location is busy all day on weekends, and surprisingly is moderately for lunch and dinner on weekdays as well.

I went with a companion for dinner during a salmon promotion with each appetizer and main course dish being prepared with salmon. I note that really only one of these appetizers and main course menu items is on the regular evening menu. The others were created especially for this salmon promotion. My friend and I ordered the beet and sugar cured salmon appetizer with a mini-potato-salad and a salmon muffin accompanied by a salad of baby spring greens and cherry tomatoes. Each was excellent. The muffin had the faintest flavor of the salmon and brie. It was sweet and delicious, as was the tiny accompanying salad in a delicious dressing. The cured salmon appetizer was equally well executed.

The main course dishes were also salmon. On one dish, the salmon was baked in salt which rendered the fileted edge and the skin of the fish perfectly crispy but regrettably the flesh of the salmon was slightly overcooked. This was accompanied by flash-fried kale which was executed perfectly. My companion, who had never tasted fried greens, was amazed by the flavor and texture of the perfectly cooked kale. The other dish featured salmon slowly steamed and topped with a pesto sauce, accompanied by a poached egg and a potato salad in a curry mayonnaise. On this dish, the salmon was cooked perfectly, still slightly pink in the center. The potato salad was one of the best versions I’ve tasted. The mild curry mayonnaise lifted the potato salad from good to extraordinary.

The variety of preparations of the salmon, each unique and flavorful was the work of an accomplished and talented cook. The fact that these are not all regular menu items increases my admiration and my curiosity.

We also tried a couple of desserts on thata visit. The molten chocolate cake was baked perfectly with a moist texture and the chocolate center oozing out as it should when the cake was cut. But the dessert of spiced fruit, with the crumble and ice cream was an even better dish. The fruit was macerated in some unusual Asian spices not usually utilized by Latin American chefs. It was exquisite.

On separate occasion I visited the new location at the Rosedal in Palermo. I had the langostino (shrimp) salad. It was sensational. One of the best salads in Buenos Aires. (You can read our assessment of the salad in this special post where we describe the best salads in Buenos Aires.)

The initial visit for dinner at Mooi came as somewhat of a surprise. What little I’ve seen online about the restaurant in articles and reviews relates to breakfast at the Belgrano location. What we were served for lunch and dinner at Mooi qualifies the restaurant for status as a full-fledged casual-dining restaurant. In fact, one of the best restaurants in the city. Mooi is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can see our assessment of breakfast at Mooi in this special post.
