El Mayor

El Mayor is located on the rooftop of an old building overlooking the archaeological excavation of the Templo Mayor. This restaurant is about as pleasant of a setting as you can find for enjoying a cup of coffee and your daily allotment of eggs or a fabulous plate of traditional Mexican cuisine.

For breakfast you can have an omelet, or have those eggs scrambled or fried, with or without a variety of sauces and accompaniments. Have it with toast or Rancheros-style on corn tortillas. Pancakes and crepes? Yep. They have those, too. You can read more about Breakfast at El Mayor here.

But El Mayor is a great spot for lunch and dinner too. They serve a full menu of traditional Mexican cuisine, including the more traditional items such as tacos, quesadillas, chalupas and escamoles for appetizers, and a full range of seafood, poultry and meat dishes, including, of course, many served with the traditional salsa mole.

Many of the traditional dishes are elevated to gourmet status with the use of complex sauces and accompaniments. This is one a handful of restaurants serving a slightly more sophisticated version of the classic cuisine, and the only with such as stunning view.

Service is top notch. The waiters are friendly and efficient. And in true Mexican form, there’s a sweet little lady over in the corner making homemade corn tortillas while you watch.

Prices are very reasonable and with this view and the well-executed menu we think El Mayor is one of the best values in the city. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, El Meyor is a guaranteed pleasant experience.
