The restaurant was pleasant enough and the food sufficiently good to warrant a return visit for those living in the neighborhood, but not sufficiently.

My search for the best casual dining options for Italian food in Mexico City led me to Attenti in Cuauhtémoc, situated on Rio Lerma along with a string of other popular restaurants. Attenti had received some pretty good reviews on consumer review sites so I was hoping for a pleasant surprise.

The restaurant looks like your stereotypical Italian trattoria. The aluminum patio chairs on the outside tables were a bit uncharacteristic but the dining room inside fit the mold with wall painted red and red checkered tablecloths and travertine floors. Each table bore a single fresh lily in small globular vase. The walls were adorned with big screen TVs. On this particular Sunday evening, I had the pleasure of watching American professional football.

There were about two other tables of patrons sitting indoors. Myself, a Spanish speaking couple and a couple men speaking English. The weather was pleasant the tables outdoors, perhaps six of them, were fully occupied. The restaurant did have a wood-burning oven (although it was not of the traditional dome-shaped variety.

A basket full of a variety of breadstuffs and chunky tomato relish are served and the table is equipped with bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The bread was fresh but not all that tasty. I would've loved a few slices of a crispy french baguette but was served some standard dinner rolls, a crisp chip-like wafer, and pizza-oven

I decided to not take chances and order some pasta. The restaurant offers eight varieties of pasta, three of which are made fresh, in house, the fettucine, tagliatelle and fettucine nero. You can then choose how the pasta is dressed with a variety of the most common sauces. I elected to have the homemade ink squid pasta with a carbonara sauce. I was offered some fresh grated parmesan.

The pasta did appear to be fresh and was cooked about right, al dente. But the sauce was a bit on the thick side resulting a rather chewy pasta dish. I’d have preferred something a little silkier in texture.

Service was very good and the delivery time on the pasta dish was about as expected.

Prices were about as expected for a mid-range restaurant in this location with the pasta dishes ranging in price from about US $7 (126 pesos) for the simple tomato sauce up to about US $12.25 (220 pesos) for a seafood sauce.

The restaurant was pleasant enough and the food sufficiently good to warrant a return visit for those living in the neighborhood, but not sufficiently inspiring to seek out.

There are other good options within walking distance such a Fontina Trattoria, one of our favorite inexpensive, casual dining spots in all of Mexico City.
