Review Summary
El Enano shakes up the Lima sandwich options by offering more than the traditional sandwiches, juice and coffee. Hamburgers, hot dogs, enchiladas, tacos and breakfast sandwiches have been added to the menu. You can enjoy all sitting at the soda-fountain reminiscent bar, watching your sandwich being constructed.

Review by: Ollie O Rating: 4.0 stars Review Date: 11/18/2018

When the conversation in Lima turns to the subject of sangucherías (sandwich shops) the name El Enano will almost certainly come up. That one, and El Peruanito, about eight blocks away, have been struggling for the position of top-dog of sandwiches in Miraflores for years.

There are a few differences that distinguish El Enano from the competitors. First, it’s not solely a sandwich and chicharrón restaurant, it offers a few more menu items to help distinguish it from the other sandwich shops. It offers big bowls of fresh fruit that have become a hallmark item, and hot dogs, hamburgers, and what it calls tacos and enchiladas.

If you’re culturally enlightened or from Texas or Mexico, don’t be fooled by the names of the menu items. The tacos and enchiladas are nothing even remotely similar to what you’d find in either Mexico or Texas at Tex-Mex restaurants. It would be more accurate to describe the tacos as “wraps”. They are sandwiches wrapped in flour tortillas. And if they add some oozing cheese to the taco, they call it an enchilada But incorrect lexicon aside, it still offers a little variety that nearby El Peruanito doesn’t. The hot dog is really a sandwich with a German or Viennese-style sausage and the hamburger is a sad excuse for a burger, considering there are so many good options for burgers in Lima at restaurants like Juicy Lucy and Bon Beef.

We weren’t all that impressed with the boring bread they use for the sandwiches. Of all the sandwiches we’ve eaten, the bread is our least favorite. But El Enano compensates with a bigger variety of toppings to throw into the sandwich to add a bit of interest.

Another thing we like is the soda-fountain design of this restaurant. There are no tables. Just long counters with tall stools facing the cooks as they build the sandwiches. I usually strike up a conversation with someone sitting nearby at the bar. Despite the obnoxious bright-green lattice lining the walls, and the glaring lights overhead, the ambiance is still more pleasant than the depressing environment at El Peruanito.

The prices are slightly lower than what you’ll find at any of the competitors, but not by much.

El Enano is unique enough, when compared to other sangucheriás in Lima, to warrant a visit. It’s worth exploring a few of the items you won’t find on the menu at other sandwich peddlers. The service is pretty good, and the soda-fountain design makes for an interesting ambiance. As far as the sandwiches … we still prefer the Pollito Pekín at El Chinito.
