Restaurant Review for La Xarcutería
Rating: 4.4 stars
La Xarcutería, although having gained a bit of fame for its burgers, is really a very unique restaurant with an extremely interesting and varied menu, mostly offering unique dishes with various type of meat as the principal ingredient in the dish. Appetizers, for example, include chicharrones (fried pork skins), grilled octupus, French fries topped with pastrami or slices of sausage, and a classic Steak tartare.
They have a variety of hot dogs and sausage sandwiches and some classic American sandwiches like a Philly cheesesteak and a Reuben sandwich. You can bet we’ll returning soon to try out all of these unique (for Bogotá) menu items.
But our recent visit to La Xarcutería was for the sole purpose of checking out their hamburgers.
I ordered the standard Cheeseburger and French fries.
What arrived, on a beautiful pottery plate, was a really great-looking burger. The first thing that you notice is that they’ve branded the restaurant logo (a graphic of a pig delineated in a manner to show the location of the various cuts of pork) on the top slice of that shiny brioche bun. It looked so good I hated to bite into it. Within a few seconds, I dismissed my reservations and took a big bite.
Wow. That was the perfect grind on that beef patty. Thee was just enough fat to make it juicy. Perfectly seasoned. There was a beautiful slice of bright orange cheddar cheese melted perfectly over that seared patty. It was topped with a crisp slice of romaine lettuce, sweet, ripe tomato slices, crisp deli pickle slices, and a few mild onion slices (possibly ever so slightly sautéed), and creamy homemade aioli. It was simply delicious. Pardon the “butcher lingo” pun, but it was a “cut” above every other burger I’d tasted in Bogotá.
The fries were cut thick. Creamy inside, crisp outside. Served hot.
And I enjoyed that delicious burger in a pleasant ambiance.
The space in which the restaurant is located was totally renovated when the restaurant recently opened. It has a clean, contemporary décor. But there are lots of wood accents and paneling, exposed brick walls, and checkered ceramic tile floors keep the contemporary personality from becoming too sterile. The clean lines on the natural maple chairs are nice. But like most of the furniture in these restaurants with contemporary and “loft-like” décor, they aren’t all that comfortable.
The waitress was friendly and attentive. I was there late in the afternoon so my table was the only one occupied in the entire restaurant. I can’t say for sure how efficient the waiters would be when the place is busy.
A clever name, a comfortable ambiance, and a near-perfect burger and fries make La Xarcutería our top choice for a burger in Bogota.
