Summary of Review
Restaurant Review for Juana M
Rating: 3.9 stars
Juana M is located in Retiro, within a stone’s throw of the city’s most luxurious hotels. It’s a small restaurant, catering primarily to the nearby office workers seeking a place for a mid-day meal and those that live in the neighborhood seeking to dine out without breaking the bank.
The restaurant is in the subterranean level of a building located across from La Recova, where many of the top restaurants in town have locations.
The dimly lit space is adorned with unusual works of art. There are lots of tables set for six to ten, to accommodate office meetings during the lunch hour. It’s a pleasant ambiance. Tasteful, but not elegant or intimidating. It’s far more laid-back than the more sterile surroundings of most of the nearby restaurants.
The menu is nothing elaborate or unique. Just the usual Argentine dishes prepared with a little more flare and soul than the typical restaurant. It’s primarily steaks, pastas, and milanesas.
What sets Juana M apart from most of the area restaurants is the well-appointed salad bar, which is included with any main course item of US$8 (ARS$100) or more. You can eat it solo for about US$6 (ARS$80).
One other thing that sets Juana M apart from the rest. The prices. They’re extraordinarily low. A 400g (14 oz) steak will only set you back US$10 (ARS$160). Bear in mind you get the salad bar free with the main course dish. That’s an extraordinary value. The steak is of medium quality. Certainly, not as good as what you’d get at El Mirasol across the street. But it’s half the price with the salad included. It’s a no brainer if you’re on a budget. Penny counters will be having to buy extra piggybacks to store the savings. Carb counter will be counting their blessings.
Service is usually good, although on occasions there are lapses when the waiter or waitress fail to properly monitor the tables.
Final assessment? Juana M is a great place for lunch or dinner on a budget. An even better for a salad if you happen to be a rabbit. We scored down for lack of creativity on the main course options. But we scored up in that category for having a salad bar, which is rare. Those factors offset each other resulting in an acceptable creativity score. But don’t go there expecting to see Coq au Vin or some unique sauce. The main course dishes are steaks and pasta.
