Summary

Best option for breakfast in Puerto Madero overlooking the harbour. Nice decor. Friendly, but lackluster service. Commendable French toast.

Restaurant Review for Breakfast at Lobo Café

Lobo Café is open from 8 am in the morning until midnight, seven days a week, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between. Breads and pastries are homemade, and therefore, fresh. They have the typical lineup of croissants, desserts, and espresso. And scrambled eggs. Nothing unique about that. But in concert with many of the more forward-thinking cafés in town, they venture slightly away from the norm by additionally offering French toast and the New York deli mainstay, lox (smoked salmon) and bagels (albeit on a something that isn’t actually a “bagel”). Coffee is locally roasted PuertoBlest and you can buy the full range of bagged PuertoBlest products to take-out.

I opted for the French toast one morning while out riding my bike. A good version of the “eggy bread” classic. Accompanied by fresh fruit. The toast was saturated with the sweet, egg mixture and didn’t really need syrup of any type although being offered that option would have been nice. We note that many of the French toast options in the city do not use an egg mixture for drenching the toast. Some merely do a quick dip in sugar water or dust the toast with sugar then caramelize it in a pan. This rendition is more in line with modern day versions of the dish.

The wait staff is all young females. In accordance with Argentine custom, they aren’t very attentive, taking the accepted Argentine stance that if a customer wants something they should wave to get the waiter’s attention. But other than this typical custom of ignoring the patrons (which foreigners perceive as inattentive service), the service was great. The waitress was both informative and friendly.

The décor is contemporary, with natural stained wood paneling on the front of the counter, and tables. All the bench seating and chairs are painted stark black. There are also black lacquered floors. The café is professionally lighted with spots and chrome pendants.

Prices are a bit on the high side. But not unusually so for this neighborhood. The French toast cost about US $12 (185 pesos). But that included tea or coffee and orange juice. The overall experience was unique enough and pleasant enough to put Lobo Café high on the list for breakfast in Buenos Aires. And probably top of the list in Puerto Madero.

Lobo Café also offers lots of lunch and dinner options that you can read about in our full review. That includes one of the best burgers in town. We provide the details about that burger here.
