Restaurant Review for Artesano

Artesano is the bar/restaurant in the Alvear Art Hotel, the Alvear Palace Hotel’s alternative for travelers who prefer something a bit less stodgy and out-of-date than the city’s stately old Alvear Palace Hotel. This hotel’s a better choice if your allergic to brass railing.

As the name implies, the hotel features art, some of which is adorning the walls in Contraluz, the hotel’s upscale restaurant, and the more casual Artesano restaurant/bar. Breakfast and lunch is available in the ultra-casual bar area and dinner is served in the slightly more sophisticated dining room (Contraluz) at the rear of the main floor.

The somewhat elegant, yet casual, table settings and the art display make for a pleasant ambiance, whether dining by day or night. But despite the beauty, it’s a bit stale and lonely in this place at lunch.

The service is good as is typical in a world-class hotel. Our waiters, host and hostesses have always been bilingual.

We’ve yet to have dinner in Contraluz, but we’ve visited Artesano at lunch and dinner on several occasions with mixed results.

The burger is the worst we’ve had in Buenos Aires. Rule #1. You don’t use ribeye, tenderloin or strip to make a burger unless you supplement it with some fat. Some chefs (that’s typically don’t receive instruction on making burgers in culinary school) apparently thought by using a more expensive cut of meat he (or she) could improve the burger. Any hamburger aficionado knows the opposite is true. Would you use tenderloin in a braised beef dish?

To add insult to injury, there was zero sear on the patty.

Simply stated, we’ve had better fast-food burgers than this one that cost a whopping US$15 ($280 ARS).

The pasta dish on another lunch visit was immensely better. A light, delicious sauce. Fresh pasta. Beautifully plated.

For a dessert I ordered a chocolate covered ice cream that can best be described as a deconstructed Nestle’s chocolate drumstick without the cone. It was good although it won’t likely win any awards.

The Alvear Art needs to rethink its entire food service format. We haven’t had dinner at Contraluz, but the casual offerings at lunch in Artesano are too limited, awkwardly presented on the menu, overpriced and sometimes, poorly executed. Service is good, but that’s an inadequate consolation for the sketchy execution of overpriced dishes.
